Bawdsey - Martin Welch - August 2006 |
Tide was in so foreshore collection limited. However, several sharks teeth in excess of 5cm length collected.Previous visits earlier in the year revealed vertebrae and ray teeth. I'd rank this site as being more productive than Ramsholt nowdays, although the walk is not so pleasant. Very rapid erosion means that the Napoleonic fort is rapidly edging closer to the sea (ca. 0.5m per month by my estimate), and plenty of material is being exposed as a consequence. Its an odd place - great for fossils, great for general reflection on the state of the coast, and a loveely stot, just like Ramsholt, to sit back and reflect on whatever....

Bawdsey - 6 November 2004 - Anne |
Due to erosion, the coastal footpath has been re routed some way in land, the map on this website is now out of date. We sneaked through the coastal defence works site, but this would not have been possible if work had been going on and may not be possible in the future.
It's true that there is a good array of fossil wood and with quite intensive searching we found 4 very small shark teeth and a ray tooth and from the crag a couple of large bits of whale bone. We have some clay to seive but I think to find anything interesting you will probably need a lot which could prove difficult to carry back to the car.
The assessment given of this location is fair, but I would add that anyone without experience is unlikely to find anything at all (unless you count fossil wood.......) |
